THE TRANSFORMATION OF GENDER ROLE IN THE COASTAL AREA OF TELUK BAKAU

Abstract

Kepulauan Riau province is one of 9 provinces in Indonesia which has the shape as Indonesian Archipelago. Demographically, the population is spread widely even to the coastal area. The majority of people living in coastal areas have livelihoods as fishermen beside the others. Teluk Bakau is a village which located in the coastal area and has the potential of fisheries natural resources and beautiful natural panoramas, in line with the developments implementation along this time and give impact on the transformation of the role which is carried out by fishermen wives in the village of the Teluk Bakau. The purpose of the study is to determine the transformation of the role undertaken by women as the wife of the fishermen in the coastal island of Bintan.
The research method is qualitative and explorative using data collection techniques in the form of participant observation and in depth interview. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling . Informan in this study are the women who have already had husband and run job as fishermen.
The result of this study explains that the development carried out in the coastal area has an impact on the transformation of gender roles with the involvement of women actively in the activities of the organization, the activities of an economic nature either creative business or engaged in a company activity.
